Coach Ty Amundsen

Head Boys’ Basketball Millennium High School and Director of AZ Battle

As A Player:

Coach Amundsen attended high school at Newark Memorial and played for legendary Basketball Coach Vance Walberg (Philadelphia 76’ers/Sacramento Kings).  Coach Amundsen helped lead Newark Memorial High to an MVAL Championship and #1 ranking in Northern California. After High School, Coach Amundsen attended Chabot Community College where in his first year they were California State Runners-Up.  In his sophomore year, he was an All-League Performer and led Chabot in scoring with a 17.8ppg.  After two successful years at Community College, Coach Amundsen accepted a Full-Ride Scholarship to attend Fresno Pacific University.  At Fresno Pacific, Coach Amundsen’s team experienced much success winning the GSAC Championship, qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament, and making it to the Elite 8. Coach Amundsen was a key contributor on the team with a 15.8ppg (2nd on the team) and 4.7apg (1st on the team).  In Coach Amundsen’s 2 years at Fresno Pacific University, the team set school records for wins.  Coach Amundsen is still Fresno Pacific University’s record holder for free throws made in a game after going 13-13 from the foul line in the GSAC Championship game.  After Coach Amundsen’s College career ended, he continued to play professionally in the San Francisco and Sacramento Pro Leagues playing against and with NBA Legends Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Brian Shaw, Lester Conner, and more.  

As a Coach:

Coach Amundsen began his coaching career at Montgomery High School where he assisted the team to a California North Coast Section Championship, 2 California North Coast Section Runners Up, 3 California North Bay League Titles, and California Division II State Runners Up.  Coach Amundsen went on to become the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Healdsburg High School for 1 season before moving to Arizona and becoming the Head Boys Basketball coach at Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear, Arizona. While assembling a staff of assistant coaches he hired 13-year NBA veteran Hersey Hawkins (Seattle Supersonics, Philadelphia 76’ers, Charlotte Hornets) to sit on his bench. Hersey Hawkins became Coach Amundsen’s assistant Coach for 5 seasons.  In Coach Amundsen’s 6 years at Estrella Foothills High School Coach Amundsen won 3 Arizona High School State Championships, 4 Arizona West Region Titles, Arizona State Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010 as well as West Region Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010.  At Estrella Foothills High School Coach Amundsen trained and developed the State’s all-time Leading Scorer Corey Hawkins (Miami Heat/Idaho Stampede).  

Coach Amundsen then left Estrella Foothills to coach at St. Mary’s High School.  In his 5 years at St. Mary’s Head Boys Basketball Coach Amundsen led the Knights to a back to back section runners-up and three  state division 1 “elite 8” appearances.  

Coach Amundsen is currently the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Millennium High School and is the Director of a youth AAU Program AZ Battle. Coach Amundsen has coached, trained, and developed numerous high school players that went on to play in both college and professional.  Corey Hawkins(UC Davis/Miami Heat/Idaho Stampede), Kyle Lee(Oregon State/Overseas Professional), Tyler Tiedeman (Boise State/Overseas Professional), Zac Tiedeman (Santa Clara/Overseas Professional), Brandon Hawkins(Portland State), Troy Coleman(Biola University), Sean Duncan(Claremont University), Marcus Ezeff (Cal/NFL Carolina Panthers), Kahlil Bell(UCLA/NFL Chicago Bears), James Pierce(Peru State), KJ Hymes(Nevada University), Deshawn Wilson(Air Force), Marcus Shaver(Portland Univerity), Odua Isibor(UCLA), Jorden Blake(Arizona State), Jon Rivera(Benedictine), Nate Anaya(Benedictine), and countless others that played at the Junior College and NAIA levels.
